Bologna is characterised by vast public squares, imposing palaces, museums, the red bricks of the buildings, the high towers and the 40 kilometres of porticoes which give the city a characteristic and unmistakable aspect. In Bologna there is the most ancient university of Europe, founded in 1088 . Bologna is famous also for its gastronomic specialties such as the tortellini, tagliatelle (fresh egg pasta) and mortadella. The Italian Academy of Cuisine wich is based in Bologna has officialy decreed the following: the width of genuine tagliatelle must be one 1,270th of the eight of the Asinelli Tower, namely exactly 8 millimetres.
