Lombardy is the cradle of the Romanesque architecture and has beautiful examples in each major city. The most striking monument of the Gothic period is the Cathedral of Milan Another amazing territory is that of Valtellina , which is is situated in the north of Lombardy (Sondrio district), along the Adda river (flowing into the lake of Como), and near the Swiss border.
