This valley is one of the most important route of communication between the Padana plains and the other side of the Alps, and early was fortified with garrisons for guarding and controlling all traffic. These primitive buildings, towers, castles, fortresses, camps, were all at the origins of the various towns which today prosper in the lower pre-alpine hills and the plains. The international airport of Malpensa rises in this area. A typical sweet produced in this zone is the exquisite Amaretto di Saronno. |
