Ustica is an isle situated in the Tyrrhenian sea at 36 miles NW from Palermo. From a distance it appears to the visitor as a huge green turtle-shaped rock, rising out of an intensely blue sea. As a result of geological activity in remote epochs, the island's coastline is steep and indented, with a series of caves and narrow inlets, bays and caves of exceptionally beauty. There are countless picturesque grottoes all around the island : a paradise for aquatic sports lovers. A growing numbers of Italian and foreign tourists are attracted by the island's gentle climate in every season, its unspoilt atmosphere, the courtesy of its inhabitants, and the quality of its touristic facilities. The island is linked to Palermo by regular ship and hydrofoil services several times every day. |
