On a terrrace overlooking the Viola coast, stands Palmi, a modern tourist town. From Palmi you go to Gioia Tauro, the most important commercial centre on the plain of the same name, with numerous activities connected with the production of olive oil. The seaside promenade is attractive and the swordfish festival held in August is also famous. The fish are caught using a special system which dates back to the Phoenician era. Looking over the straits that separate Calabria from Sicily the town of Scilla rises unexpectedly. Its centre is made up of many small houses sloping gently down towards the two bays. |
