Due to the unmistakable warmth of the peolple, the scenery in the Gulf of Naples is one of the most beautiful and interesting in the world. Over the centuries various foreign powers have dominated the area and as a result Naples is a melting pot of different art forms, cultures and languages. Naturally there are many churches, squares, monuments and narrow streets to visit, where a unique atmosphere can be experienced. Against the back-ground the imposing form of the Vesuvius stands out, the only active continental volcano in Europe, from which an unforgettable panorama can be enjoyed. The catastrophic eruption of the volcano in 79 A.D. submerged with ashes the two towns of Herculaneum and Pompeii, placed at its foot. The excavations brought to light, practically intact, the two urbanistic settlements. This ancient site is today an amazing archaeological area among the best-preserved in the world. It is visited by thousands of tourists every year. |
