A Trullo is an unusual rural stone construction built following a highly original method. It is circular in shape and made of dry stone with a cone, surmounted by a pinnacle. Very often Trulli have astrological and religious symbols painted on their roofs. In the province of Bari, Trulli are to be found in the area comprising Gioia del Colle, Locorotondo, Noci, Putignano, and naturally Alberobello. Putignano is a little town famous for its yearly carnival when colourful floats, designed by local craftsmen, wind through the streets crowded with revellers in fancy dress. The Grottoes of Castellana represent the best known speleologic area in the whole of Italy. The lunar landscape, made of crystalline columns and jagged points, glows and sparkles, and the natural sculpures create a fairytale atmosphere which attracts visitors from all over the world. |
