This is a territory that after a several km of plains, begins to climb up through the valleys: winding between vineyards and castles, clinging villages, and thick forests. The traveller journeys through mellows, memorable landscapes, enjoying a cuisine which combines the influence of nearby regions in most original mixture. This is a land of wayfarers and pilgrims, wine-grovers and lords of castles, where Dante Alighieri spent a season as guest of the Malaspina family in the Castle of Oramala. The Oltrepo has been famous from ancient times for its excellent wine production. It has a wide and varied range of DOC wines: still, austere wines, and sparkling wines such as the Spumante. |
