The word murgia means sterile ground, since everywhere the surface layer of limestone breaks through. The ladscape is full of olive trees, vineyards, almond trees, cherry trees, and is dotted by beautiful Romanesque cathedrals. The amazing castle-temple Castel del Monte is situated in the countryside near Andria. The castle was built in the fist half of the 13th century on an unusual octagonal plan, with eight equally octogonal towers marking the vertices of a polygon. Castel del Monte weaves its own particular magic spell, each architectural element following precise algebraic and astronomical laws. |
