Gargano is a popular tourist destination for Italian and foreign visitors. Known as the spur of Italy, it conserves its original character and its ancient traditions. The promontory is a huge limestone whose grottoes, dolines and silk holes give clear evidence of its karst nature. But, the green of the Aleppo pines softens the landscape, while the orange groves, olive trees, pines and immense carobs growing in the valley and on the slopes break up its stony harshness. There are comfortable hotels and camping sites all along the coast, lovely sea caves and bays dotted here and there. The most famous seaside resorts are Vieste, Peschici, and Mattinata. Margherita di Savoia is both a seaside and thermal resort, famous also for its salt-works which stretch for 20 kms along the coast. |
