The National Park of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano was instituded in 1991. In size, it is second only to the Stelvio National Park in the mountains of northern Italy. The park occupies most of the southern half of the province of Salerno, at the geographic centre of the Mediterranean, where sea and land routes have served as conduits for exchanges of people, goods, and cultures from prehistory up to the present. Perched above forests of beech and groves of tall olive trees, tiny hilltop towns are quiet and introspective. The coast is an eye-stunning succession of beaches, coves and headlands thrusting fingers of rock out into a turquoise-tinted sea. The entire park is part of UNESCO's Man and Biosphere program. |
