Barbagia's inland is ancient, hidden in the heart of Sardinia. It is the Sardinian mountains territory, rich in forests and scattered with rocky peaks, among the meadows, with rare and distant villages, its inhabitants jealous of ancient traditions. Famous for its wine, praised by the verse of D'Annunzio, Oliena is also known for its handicrafts (shawls and embroidery) and for the local gastronomic products. Orgosolo is a centre that is particularly representative of the social reality of Barbagia; it is set on a steep slope. Characteristic, in the streets of the town, are the murals painted on the walls of the houses dating from the end of the 1960s on. Nearby there are also many archaeological sites. The typical dishes are roast lamb, and kid and suckling pig, called porcetto, cooked long and slowly over a fire of olm-oak, lentisk, and arbutus. |
