In Siena, place of international culture, people breathe an atmosphere that they cannot find elsewhere in the world. Compactly trecentesca (14th century) and encircled by ancient walls, it rises in a hilly landscape from which its roads are irradiated. The most famous manifestation is the Palio, (an ancient horse-race kept in the public square called “Del Campo”. It takes place twice a year: 2 July and 16 August ). Moreover, Siena hosts the Italian jazz review (Jul -Aug), and the week of the wines, in June. The hilly territory around Siena, called Chianti, has been designated by international organizations as among the most unspoilt areas of Europe, one of the most refined centres of the civilisation of bread, wine, and olive oil. |
