South of Trapani you encounter Marsala, a busy and well equipped city, famous above all for its wine industry producing the sweet Marsala. The central square is attractive with the cathedral and town hall, both Baroque. At the sea it is worth to visit the excavations of the Roman Insula and the museum of the Punic ship, where one can discover how ships were built 2000 years ago, how the crew ate in those times and how the wood was conserved by the sea. In Mazara del Vallo the old centre is interesting, with its 12th century Norman cathedral and other interesting buildings such as the 17th century palace of the knights of Malta. Selinunte was founded by the Greeks and conserves archaeological remains which are among the most important in the Mediterranean sea. The acropolis dominates over the sea, with numerous temples and the sanctuary of Malophoros. |
