The archipelago of the Pelagie islands consists of the islands of Lampedusa, Linosa, and Lampione. The Pelagie can be reach by air from Palermo or by daily ferry from Porto Empedocle. Lampedusa is the biggest of the three islands. Its climate is warm throughout the year and rainfall is very limited. Lampedusa has a typical Mediterranean steppe landscape, together with sparse bushland. The sea is wonderfully limpid and unspoilt: a paradise for water sports. Linosa is of volcanic origin. It is greener of Lampedusa because of the lava oring of its fertile soil. The waters surrounding the island abound with groupers, white bream, and turtles which lay their eggs on the beach in the early summer. On the Pelagie the pleasure of the beaches and the sea go together with the delights of the palate. Typical dishes include pagliata di pesca (fish fry-up), pasta con le sarde (pasta with sardine sauce), orata al forno (roast fish), and for dessert almond biscuits and cassata. |
