One of the most interesting part of Oristano's province is in the territory of Cabras, which is of notable ecological worth and was once the seat of several ancient civilisations: Phoenician-Carthaginian, Roman and then medieval. The Stagno di cabras lagoon is one of the largest in Europe and is populated by an avian fauna of great interest. A few km to the south is Arborea: an area specialised in agriculture; rice, strawberries, watermelons, cereals, and a wide range of vegetables. Among the archaeological remains is of particular interest the beautiful 6th century hypogeum sanctuary of S. Salvatore, that can be admired in the village with the same name. In Cabras the events in honour of San Salvatore, with the race called corsa degli scalzi are of ethnographic importance. |
