The point at which the valley begins to rise, taking on the typically Alpine features and almost closing in, can be identified as the real border separating the middle valley from the Alta Valtellina. Mountains with perennial glaciers, and uncontaminated nature which from the Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio unwinds between peaks and mountain lakes. There are many well-equipped footpaths, resting places, mountain flora and superb exemplars of Alpine fauna. The gastronomic tradition is ancient and rich in excellent specialities: mushrooms, polenta, cheese and pizzoccheri (potatoes, cabbage,and casera cheese), salamis and bresaola. In this area the Terme Bormiesi represents a famous spa centre equipped with hot swimming-pools, health centre, sauna and Turkish baths, and facilities for many therapies. |
