The last of the region's main centres is Macerata, a dignified town, famous for its annual open-air opera festival held in the Sferisterio arena containing approximately 7000 people. Smaller inland towns in the province of Macerata are well worth visiting. For example, you should not miss Recanati: the birthplace of Giacomo Leopardi, considered Italy's best loved poet and writer. From Casa Leopardi you can make your way through the historic centre of Recanati to places which were part of the poet's life and a frequent source of his inspiration. But, wine alone could provide an excellent reason for touring in this zone! |
