Lecce is the main town of the area of Salento. The beauty of its churches and the nobility and elegance of its residences amaze and fascinate all who visit it, and it is quite rightly acclaimed as one of the capitals of Baroque, a style which here has acquired an unrivalled originality. The Salento's coastline alternates between the wild precipices which plunge into the sea to the golden sandy beaches of the Ionian coast, in a progressive succession of Saracen towers, marine caves, bays, islands, rocks, beaches, and damp areas which have no paragons in the Mediterranean. Here terracotta (pottery) takes on hundreds of forms on the pottery wheel; the ones to collect are those which magically imprison the wind within a whistle. |
