Isernia lies nestling amid the Apennine range with an outlet towards the Tyrrhenian coast along the A1 motorway and another towards the Adriatic sea. As the writer Guido Piovene wrote, the terrain evokes the landscapes of Scotland and Ireland, where tradition and the values of the past still linger on in daily life. The Museum of Palaeolithic Life shows the remains of settlements dating back over seven hundred thousand years. It has now become an attraction for visitors from all over the world. A fine example of early medieval culture is the Abbey of San Vincenzo at Volturno. Architectural highlights of the second millennium include many lovely castles, elegant town-houses,and Romanesque and Baroque churches. In the surroundings there are suggestive landscapes and an unspoilt nature. UNESCO is currently carrying out researches at the MAB wildlife reserves at Montedimezzo and Collemelucccio. Olive oil and wine are important products in the Volturno valley and the area surrounding Isernia which also produces garlic, onions, and chicklings. |
