The forest area of the Gargano extends for 11,000 hectares, and includes the woods of Sfilze and Ginestra. The vegetation is maily Mediterranean, comprising tall holm oaks, maples, white poplars, the cornelian cherry and beech trees, whose trunks, rising like columns to the sky, are a breathtaking sight. Less than 30 kms from Monte S. Angelo lies S. Giovanni Rotondo, a town famous for the church and convent of S. Maria delle Grazie, while a new sanctuary, whose construction was promoted by Padre Pio da Pietrelcina, stands, along with a modern hospital. San Giovanni Rotondo is a centre for the many pilgrims who come to venerate Padre Pio, the miracle-working friar. |
