In the heart of the Pianura Padana, the province of Cremona can be considered a sort of borderland betwen Lombardy and Emilia Romagna. Cremona constituted an important focus for the population of the surrounding fertile countryside and a strategic junction for traffic and communications along the Po and the Via Postumia, the great artery linking Genoa to Aquileia. The city is surrounded by ancient buildings: the Torrazzo, the Cathedral, the Baptistry, the Loggia dei Militi and the Palazzo del Comune, and constitues the loftiest expression of urban civilisation in the combination of monuments to civil and religious power. The violin is traditionally believed to have been invented in Cremona. The Cremonese 1715 made by Antonio Stradivarius is the most famous violin in the world. |
