Caltanisetta was founded by the Arabs as its name suggests : it is a combination of Qal'at (castle) and Nissa. The centre of Caltanisetta consists of Piazza Garibaldi where the Cathedral stands. There are also importantant museums such as the Mineralogical, Palaeontological and Sulphur-Mine Museum. The province of Caltanisetta boasts 7 naturalistic areas. Moreover, the province is rich in artistic and historical treasures and folkloristic events. The archaeological zones of Sabucina,Gibil-Gabib, and Sofiana contain First Bronze Age, Roman, and Byzantine remains. The area is famous also for the hand embroidery and the production of the delicious torrone. |
