Bergamo was founded on a hill. Bergamo has a double-faced appearance, with the ancient quarters on high and the modern part below. Bergamo is well-known as a highly industrialised province, and less famous as a centre of culture, art, and viticulture. Yet the vines still take root around the upper city, a sign of the great importance which their cultivation had in the past. Typical Bergamo products are the cansonèi (ravioli filled with pork and beef, macaroons, sultanas, and pears), polenta, Taleggio cheese that constitutes an ideal complement to polenta, matched with the red Valcalepio wines. In the surroundings, Trescore Balneario is a famous thermal resort. |
