Benevento, the provincial capital of Samnium, dates from the 4th century B.C., when it was known as Maloenton, a name turned into Beneventum with the Roman colony that marked the beginning of its greatest spendour. The main monuments at Benevento are the Castle, the churches of S. Bartolomeo, S. Domenico, Madonna delle Grazie e S. Sofia. Most of the products that enrich the gastronomy in this area can be related to an artistic and qualitative craftsmanship: from the delicious torrone to the vast range of tinned foods. Pietrelcina was the native town of Padre Pio (Father Pius) and a visit to his native House, but also to the castle and the churches, is recommended. |
