The provincial capital of Ascoli Piceno lies at the southern end of the Marche. This beguiling old town is well worth an overnight stay. Its marble-paved main square is easily one of the most beautiful in Italy. Many medieval festivals take place in Ascoli Piceno and its province. One of the best is the Quintana jousting in Ascoli's main square on the first Sunday of August. It is the most authentic medieval goings-on in the Marche. In this area you must try the olive ascolane, deep-fried stuffed olives, and the excellent wines. |
