L'Aquila is situated at 721m and it is encircled by ancient medieval walls. Since its foundation L'Aquila has been divided into as many lots as the number of the castles. Each lot has its own church square and fountain. The beautiful cathedral dates back to the 13th century. It was restored after the two terrible earthquakes in 1703 and 1915. The remains of the Amphitheatre (late 1st century) and the Theatre, which dates back to the Augustan age, can still be seen. In the surroundings there are several well-equipped winter resorts such as Campotosto - famous for its long ski tracks - that is reflected in the homonymous lake. |
