In the region which boasts the highest summits of the Apennines, visitors can enjoy a wide range of sports facilities. The territory of Roccaraso, Rivisondoli and Pescocostanzo, the area between Ovindoli and Campo Felice, boasts the winter resorts of Gran Sasso and Maiella which every year attract thousands of enthusiasts from all over the country, and not just to ski. Other facilities provided are: ski-touring for the more enterprising people, snowboarding for the reckless ones and, for the more contemplative ones cross-country skiing, on the vast plateaux of the Rocche, Campo Imperatore, Cinque Miglia and the Piani di Pezza. Sulmona - famous all over the world for the production of sugared almonds - is one of the most characteristic art towns in this area. According to the legend, the town was founded by Solimo, a friend of Aeneas: Sulmo, as the town was called in ancient times, was a Roman settlement and the birthplace of the poet Ovid. And in Scanno, the women still continue to wear the same traditional austere costumes captured in the photos of Cartier-Bresson. |
