The Puglia region (or Apulia, in English) is a long, narrow peninsula, mostly occupied by plains and hills, and the Gargano promontory, with high, steep cliffs. The hilly area is called "Le Murge" and in Apulia there is the second largest plain in Italy: The Tavoliere. The very long coastline is usually low with sandy beaches. Each area is caracterised by its own dialects, cookings, landscapes, folklore which are all worth visiting. There world famous attraction that you will see only in Apulia is the "Trulli": Whitewashed cones made of stones held together without mortar. Fish plays a very important role in the diet; the Puglia region is also known for wheat farming and its olive groves, which are among the most important in Italy. A typical dish is the ear-shaped pasta "orecchiette". Tourism is playing an important role in the Puglia economy and a new type of accommodation is growing: the Masseria which is the typical puglia old farmhouse building restructured like rural hotels.
